Sydney five-piece Mega Fäuna have come into their own on their debut album, softmore, out March 19 on Blossom Rot Records. Born from COVID lockdown malaise and a shared vision of emboldening more women to take to the musical stage, Mega Fäuna craft songs that are intimate yet expansive: five voices form layered harmonies over intricate and surprising instrumentation, with lyrics that explore the softness and secondness of womanhood. Sharing members with The Buoys, Sweetie, Wiles, Skeleten and Baby Beef, there is a richness to the Mega Fäuna sound that is testament to the experience and passion of its players.
softmore playfully skips between cheeky rock n roll love songs (‘heart beat’, ‘bb there’), epic odes to fantasy worlds (‘sleep deceit’, ‘make believe’) and the sparkling synthy dream pop that have earnt the band deep love in the Sydney scene (‘lifelike’, ‘new skin’). Following on from EP Fibonacci Sequins, Mega Fäuna debut album feels contemplative yet assured - a coming of age whereby the band know themselves better than ever, but are still charged with a sense of wonder and curiosity about what’s around the bend.
